Loneliness at University

University is a time for new experiences and can be really exciting but at the same time can be quite daunting. University is an opportunity to be more independent, have more freedom and pursue a topic you are passionate about. University could also come with living in an unfamiliar city without friends and family and having new pressures and expectations. All of this can leave you feeling lonely and cause you to struggle with your mental health. These difficulties can occur at any time during your university experience, not only in the first year. It’s important to remember that these feelings are completely normal and can happen to anyone. Loneliness has always been a problem for university students but during the pandemic loneliness has increased drastically as study moved online. Since the pandemic has started 1 in 4 university students report feeling lonely all or most of the time. As studies moved online normal interactions and relationships were disrupted and many students felt like they did not belong.
